Role Summary:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Machinist to join our engineering team.

This is an opportunity to play an important role in the development of our machining capability, supporting existing aircraft maintenance and repair operations while helping us expand into CNC machining and component manufacture.

You will manufacture, modify and repair precision components using manual machine tools, with the opportunity to develop your skills in CNC machining as our capability grows. The work will include bespoke engineering requirements and the manufacture of components for both freighter and passenger aircraft.

The successful candidate will take pride in producing high-quality work, interpreting technical data accurately and contributing to the continued development of an efficient, capable and versatile machine shop.

Main responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, grinders and other workshop machinery to manufacture, modify and repair precision components.
  • Support the introduction and development of CNC machining capability, including the set-up and operation of a flat-bed CNC machine.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, dimensional tolerances and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) requirements.
  • Manufacture components in accordance with applicable engineering drawings, specifications and approved technical data.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, tooling configurations, speeds and feeds for a range of engineering materials.
  • Carry out first-off and in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment, ensuring components meet the required dimensional and quality standards.
  • Support the manufacture of aircraft floorboards and other components for freighter and passenger aircraft as the machine shop’s capabilities develop.
  • Work closely with production and engineering teams to support aircraft maintenance requirements, bespoke repairs and planned manufacturing activities.
  • Maintain machinery, tooling and equipment in good working condition, carrying out routine maintenance as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to improve workshop efficiency, quality and manufacturing capability.

Key requirements include:

  • Experience within an aviation MRO Part 145 (or equivalent) environment
  • Proven experience in precision machining, including the set-up and operation of manual lathes and milling machines.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience selecting appropriate tooling and machining parameters for materials such as aluminium, titanium and stainless steel.
  • Competence in using precision measuring instruments, including micrometres, vernier callipers and gauges.
  • A methodical approach to work, with a strong focus on quality, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • The ability to work independently, solve practical engineering problems and manage competing priorities.
  • Fully qualified Machinist or Toolmaker, ideally through a recognised apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3 or an equivalent technical qualification.
